So, my wife reads newspapers and magazines to the point that our recycling pile is as tall as I am if I miss a pickup date, which happens twice a week. Okay, maybe that is overstating things, but she does read a lot. A book can be read in two days casually, or a flight if she takes a trip. So, I figured I’d get her a Kindle. The original is just a beast. The technology is great, but the design is horrible. I hesitated, and then heard rumors about the Kindle 2.
So, today, I got on the list of Kindle 2 owners. I’m not sure how she’ll receive it actually. She loves books. I am a technophile so I love not having paper floating around, requiring recycling and storage. File boxes are the bane of my existance yet they are in each closet [at least]. But the Kindle 2 promises a slim, lightweight reader with 3G wireless access on the Amazon WhisperNet that transfers books in just one minute from any location that gets a 3G signal. The battery lasts 2-3 weeks without a charge and powers the storage of 1500 books. I’m not sure how well the Text-To-Speech capabilities are, and I doubt many will use it, but it is there.
This is part of her birthday, so I hope she likes it. Mainly because I’m tired of hauling 30 newspapers, magazines, and bits of paper out to the curb. Oh, and the books… the books. Amazing things happen when someone loves books. At one point, she flew across the country with a suitcase full of books because she had already read them and was giving them to family.
This might turn out bad now that I think about it.
