This family used to read a lot. I stopped reading anything but textbooks when I moved out to DC. But I got a Kindle 2 for my significant other… well, it arrived today. She likes it, but didn’t get to read a book on it yet. The sample she downloaded sucked her into the Kindle 2 experience though. Nearly instant gratification, easily read screen, long battery life, and the list goes on. The text-to-speech function brought laughter, I think she said something like “That’ll never be used.” and I figured it was because it is too robotic and staccato. Not to mention she doesn’t like audio books…
The thing is pretty dense. I figured it would be lighter, but it caught me off guard. One thing I don’t like is that the back is 80% metal, and the top 20% is plastic. It isn’t perfectly molded at that joint, so it has a visual defect. Something Apple wouldn’t have let pass the design stage for sure.
It is easy to navigate, but the buttons give no visual/audio notification that they were depressed, you simply have to wait for the screen to refresh, which I witnessed caused multiple page turns. It is simply something a new users needs to learn first hand. When you have a fast computer, picking up the Kindle 2 is like moving from Sports Car to Donkey.
Tomorrow is day two of the Kindle 2 experience. It is making me want to read for fun instead of just for class, but I have to study for an exam on Monday. Wow, I am so much fun on the weekends. Lets see…. read a book on the Kindle 2, or read a textbook to prep for an exam on monday. My choices are just overwhelming me with excitement.
