I've been misdirected… GPS powered Football.

by James Hatch on August 15, 2009

So, more than 10 years ago, I thought of creating a football that was powered by GPS so that you could eliminate the problems associated with moving the chains, discovering if the ball passed the endzone, or any number of point-of-view issues.

Well, I was watching the Science Channel’s “Beyond Tomorrow” and a commercial came on for “The Future of…” Play episode and they dropped the ball on me by saying someone has created a GPS powered football. ARGH!

Here is an article about it on Discovery.

Since I wanted to use a GPS module that didn’t require a completely new set of electronics, I thought I could use the standard GPS system. 10+ years ago, I don’t think the technology was available. Now, it could be done. Then, I figured it would require a miniature GPS system around the perimeter of the field.

At least someone is doing it. It will suck the mystery out of the game to a large extent. That was one of the biggest issues with making it a reality or even pursuing it beyond the thought exercise.
