You know that health care bill and its grand size?

by James Hatch on August 21, 2009

It is a 1018 page PDF/Document. That is huge right? I mean, how can I read it?

Well, how about trying?
Each page is either 23 or 27 lines.
Each line is typically 8 words long.
Each page is only 184 words.
That means that the entire thing has roughly 190,000 words. With a lot of fluff before and after the real content. It really is a lot less than that number.

To put this in perspective, Harry Potter books have a range of 70,000 to 90,000 words (Estimated), and 12 year olds read each book in one night. Oh, and there are 7 of them.

To make an argument that it is too much to digest is crazy. Betsy McCaughey was on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, and she came out with this huge binder as an example of how massive this bill is. I just don’t get it. She said it was 1 of 2 binders. It is nothing more than fear mongering hyperbole. It is sad because most people aren’t going to even pull that bill up to see how spartan the bill is in terms of text and complexity. It is complex because it is written in the same form as legal argument. With things like “Shall” being used which belies the fact that it isn’t an option.

Anyway, find the bill, read it for yourself. There are no death panels, and it won’t make the whole nation go socialist.
