If you’ve spent any time watching Science Fiction movies, you know that the reality we exist in, is limited to only that which we experience and observe. So, we have the French who are becoming somewhat American in their anger over ‘shopped’ images, including civil penalties if a warning footer is not attached to an image that has been modified. I heard about this via This Week In Tech, and found an article on Ars Technica about it. If you watch this video from Dove, called Evolution, you can see just what is involved in hacking the reality that we live in.
Ethically, people should grow up being told that what they see isn’t necessarily true. There is no Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, Leprechauns, and many other figments of the imagination. Children grow up thinking these are all real, until reality presses in on them and they have a separation between their child mind, and their adult existence. The same thing exists for a person who watches an advertisement for a McDonalds Big Mac, and then purchases one. They are never the same, but we are presented with a “best case” scenario.
I believe it is a worthless endeavor to punish someone for not having a footer. A somewhat tyrannical attempt to control the press and publishing. False advertising is false advertising.
RealityHacker.com is a site to be launched which is dedicated to the super-realistic modification of pictures and video. I’m still testing software, but if you are interested, let me know.
