A quick thought about Ethics and the David Letterman issue…

by James Hatch on October 11, 2009

Watching the news lately seems to be akin to listening to playground conversation in grade school… “Can you believe that Suzie said that about Billy?” For crying out loud, news organizations and politicians making any argument about an entertainer sleeping with interns as a comparison to politicians sleeping with interns is absurd. The only point of comparison should end at the point where they are humans. That is about it.

Politicians should be beyond reproach. There can never be an issue of ethics. Few look up to David Letterman for guidance, or have him in charge of leading millions of people. David Letterman has a much more limited sphere of influence, and he makes it known that you shouldn’t be aspiring to have him lead the nation… or that you should take advice from him. Ask him sometime, you’ll see.

He’s an entertainer. Politicians, Reporters, and the entirety of news organizations should not be drawing a comparison between themselves and a guy who cracks jokes for a living, lest you want to be seen as entertainers and jokes.

I’d run for office, but that brings about another discussion.
