Everything Old is New Again

I remained stunned again today to hear that there are pirates still in existence in this modern age. So, I think everything old is new again. I recently saw a map of where the internet is, and although it seems there are pockets everywhere, for the most part it is firmly rooted in countries one might call “Western” or “Westernized” which doesn’t bode well for adoption around the world. The reason this is even mentioned is because another yacht was boarded, and the owners abducted and put in a container somewhere on/off the coast of Somalia. I also read that because of piracy, native fishermen can now fish enough to make money because commercial trawlers aren’t going as close to the coast. The utilitarian ethicist might argue that this is a win for all involved, well, you know, except for those who are shot in the process of recovering abductees. (My spell checker says that “Abductee” is not a word, perhaps it was taken by aliens.)
