Like HTTP://www, the Hashtag # is a waste of space.

by James Hatch on November 10, 2009

I don’t know why people have taken to using the Hashtag short of the adoption within Twitter, and even there, I don’t understand it. The hashtag doesn’t do anything within search engines. Do a search for #tablet and you’ll get the same results with or without the hashtag. I would understand it if it had something to do with directing traffic, but it doesn’t. For instance, the @ symbol directs traffic to whoever is at that domain. (ie: user@domain) The Hashtag just takes up space, and like the HTTP://www before every address, I’m pretty sure people will regret adopting it. Simply use a set adopted topic list. Just like tags and categories on blogs and news sites, we don’t need the #, another archaic and bandwidth consuming waste of space.
