Balloon Boy Family gets $42,000 Bill

by James Hatch on December 23, 2009

I don’t know why this bill reached $42,000 when anyone who has ever seen Mythbusters could have told any observer with authority to initiate this search and tracking fiasco that the balloon was impossible to carry a child unless it was a newborn made of rice crispy treats. Then there are the people who could have done the calculations to see if said rice crispy treat child could have been lifted, which is a simple formula of the diameter and height of the balloon. There is a variable based on air density, but for the most part, that balloon shouldn’t have been able to lift anything beyond 20 pounds at the most. Just a guess.

But a $42,000 bill is better than jail time I would say. The only reason why this got blown out of proportion was because somebody thought there was a chance that someone was in the balloon.

To knowingly let this play out is the real crime. Not the search. If anything it is a good exercise in the event that this really takes place. But knowing that your child is sitting safely on the ground, pretending to be upset, sobbing, whatever else you have; it is a testament to reality television. Reality TV is what has created the mindset that enables someone to do something like this. The same mindset that creates rubberneckers; you know the type, who slow down because there are flashing lights, and in the effort to slow down, causes an accident between other people who are saying “WoW, flashing lights, I better pay attention to that instead of the road.”

But this shouldn’t have gotten as far as it did.

edit: The AP is reporting that Papa Heene is getting 90 days including 60 days on work release and I think it was 4 years of probation. Ouch.
