I have finally been given the green light to type!

by James Hatch on January 19, 2010

After breaking my hand on Christmas Eve, I’m finally able to type. Albeit with considerable stiffness from my left hand due to where I broke my hand, I couldn’t move my fingers for the last 4 weeks. I’m told I’ll still be having a hard time with the whole range’o'motion for up to 4 weeks, but I was given the green light to start doing whatever I need to get back into this blogging saddle. Typing up till now has consisted of me typing at a rate upwards of 90 words per minute on my right hand, and then slowing down to grab letters on my left pinky… making my wpm somewhere around 8. Abysmal to say the least. My project launches have stalled except for the research side of things. So, I’ll be picking up the pieces and continuing to relocated the projects to a project server. We’ll see how far we get by the end of next week.

So, what happened? Well, I slipped on ice while clearing a glacier from in front of an open parking spot when a neighbor decided he wasn’t having any of that and simply moved his car. So, to be nice, I cleared the spot with another neighbor coming to help near the end. Total volume was about 8 feet wide by 5 feet long, by 4 feet deep. The neighbor that parked in front of that, cleared enough space to move his car into the empty spot next to the one blocked by the glacier. Nice. So, as thanks, the Universe decided to have me slip on ice and break my fall by landing on my hand. Broke the knuckle clean off I was told by the third doctor. This was a week later after having gone to the ER at 4am on Christmas. They were thrilled to see someone break the threshold. It is amazing how empty the ER was on Christmas as everyone expected Santa and were being nice to each other. So, the ER doctor says she can’t see anything but wants me to go see a general practitioner, or specialist. I see my GP who can’t see anything and I have an MRI which they can’t make heads or tails of so refer me to a specialist. MMI, thanks for seeing what I was feeling. Ken Berry was the PA who saw the break clear as day, today showed me the point from a better angle and x-ray. The other X-rays were cloudy, probably because of how swollen my hand was. But, I still am bothered that a break wasn’t seen my the ER doctor, nor the GP doctor, and no one said anything about the MRI. I’m surprised I’m not glowing in the dark. ;)

So, I still have some healing to do it appears, so I still have to take it easy. Typing RTFGCVB456 is somewhat still difficult. But, I’m ready to get going again. I would rather have broken a leg, at least I could still type.

tl;dr? Breaking your fingers is a little slice of hell for someone who spends 8-20 hours on his computer each day.
