What Just Happened to Competition and Consumer Power

Let me get this straight. The Amazon Kindle allowed consumers to purchase books for, lets say… $10. And they were selling, and the publishers had to take that price point because it was selling, and very well. Maybe they didn’t make as much, I hear it was a 30/70 split with Amazon taking the 70. [...]

The City of Los Angeles outsources to Google Apps

Wow. Just Wow. Google has been able to secure a small bonanza in the form of 30,000 customers through Los Angeles porting over its mail system to Google. Something I find rather odd. I understand they are trying to save costs, it is California afterall and they are in financial turmoil, but what now? If [...]

Random Thought: Health Care Reform Bill HR3200 Start Up Funding

I’m reading the Health Care Bill, HR3200. An interesting note, on page 120, line 8. The start-up capitalization is only $2,000,000,000. Yah, $2 Billion to fund a program that is supposed to cover upwards of 330 million people. To put this in perspective, in October of 2006, YouTube was sold for $1.65 Billion. So, the [...]

Could this Apple of Discord lead to a new Trojan War?

I guess there is some rumbling in the warm and fuzzy world of Apple fanpersondom. That is hard to say. Anyway, this story recounts some problems brewing in an Apple store. Personally, I’ve never been in an Apple Store. I looked at the outside of one. But Until recently, I never found anything interesting in [...]

NYTimes Article reinforces my thought that Health Insurance is next housing bubble.

I have been saying for about a year now that Health Insurance is going to be the next housing bubble. It simply can’t continue to grow at the rate it has, currently somewhere around 17%, with its current valuation of being 16% of the GDP. Well, the New York Times has an article by Jenny [...]

Is iTunes sitting on its ASCAP?

Greg Sandoval has an interesting article on C|NET today regarding the ASCAP/BMI perception that iTunes isn’t paying its fair share. For things like its new streaming radio, and for sampling songs, as well as other issues. I like giving credit where it is due, so go visit Sandoval’s article for the in depth report. Here [...]

“Unless you act, the financial system of this country and the world will melt down”

This is astonishing. I had done some basic research into this. I read that the money market sector had been purged of some 400 billion dollars in a matter of hours. To the point where the market was frozen to cool it off. I read earlier in 2008 that European Central Bank, after pumping 200 [...]

The Lifesaver Bottle – A real life saver if you can afford it.

I’m a huge fan of technology, I try to get the latest gadgets, and if I can’t, I read all about them. This led me to TED.COM, a great site to learn about some new technologies that are deserving of more mainstream attention. You can subscribe to them as a PodCast on iTunes, even in [...]

Some past projects…

I was in the way-back-machine, thinking about old projects that failed since it was easy to overcome the barriers. For instance, there was a project that I started called “SoundSoldier” that would encrypt account identifiable markers into music as MP3’s as it was purchased and downloaded. It was easy to wipe out the marker, so [...]

In the Future…

There is an interesting project going on over at a Posterous site named Richard Smith. Posterous is a blogging site, you can check it out too. Anyway, the Dollar ReDesign Project proposes different designs to the current US dollar. What will it look like, what kind of functionality will it have?
Very interesting design work going [...]

Recent Project Estimate shows promise…

I recently co-wrote a paper regarding the prospect of turning a newspaper around from ever declining circulation and hinted at the Kindle 2 being the lead prospect for an wholesale cost of $250/Kindle. I’m pleasantly surprised that the target number could be perfectly aligned with both profitability for the turnaround, and for Amazon.

iSuppli recently divulged [...]

AIG v AIGFP v Press v Politics : Two sides to the story.

This is amazing. Slowly discovering the real story. I had initially suggested that AIG was at odds with everyone not employed by AIG, and that holds true both in generous bonuses and the track it took to land us all here. Well, AIG FP at least. Then I watched the grilling of Liddy which showed [...]
